Introducing Our New Usage-Based Pricing Model: ZeroTier Essential

I’m excited to share an important change to our pricing and subscription options. Starting today, we are moving to a usage-based pricing model and introducing a new package for business users, called ZeroTier Essential. These changes will simplify our pricing, increase flexibility, and better align with the value we provide as a company.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Why the change?

Over the past decade, we’ve evolved from an open-source project into a company with multiple offerings, including SaaS products and commercial software. We’ve introduced new business-oriented features to enhance customer experience. We are updating our pricing to reflect this increased value and growth.

These changes are also grounded in customer feedback. You’ve told us you want straightforward and adaptable pricing that scales with your actual usage of the product. We believe that moving to a usage-based pricing model is the best way to meet this request.

Introducing the Essential tier

One of the key elements of our new pricing and packaging is the introduction of the “Essential” tier. For new customers, Essential replaces the pricing tier formerly known as “Professional”. This new package gives you straightforward pricing with two components, billed monthly:

  1. A flat $5 subscription that includes advanced features and 10 free devices
  2. A $2 per-device cost for additional authorized devices

Essential bundles together some of the most used and requested features among our business customers. Elements that were previously a la carte, such as Admin and SSO seats are now included. Essential also includes new business features such as 30 day audit logs. All of these are part of a single low monthly subscription.

The usage component is based on the number of authorized devices per customer. That means you pay for only the devices you use, with a bill that scales up and down as your ZeroTier deployments do. It also removes the need to predict future usage or purchase node packs before adding new devices.

Moving forward, our development team will be prioritizing enhancements to the Essential package. We will continue to refine and expand business-oriented features, so customers who sign up for Essential can expect new capabilities that will bring even greater value and usability.

Support for our free user community

Our community of free users has always been a critical part of our journey and we are deeply grateful for the ongoing support of our community members. Current entitlements for our existing free users will remain unchanged. New users who sign up for the free version of ZeroTier will receive a more limited set of features and entitlements. This new Basic tier includes 10 devices and 3 networks. ZeroTier Basic is designed to reflect the most common usage levels among our free user base, including home hobbyists and gamers. This change ensures that the free tier meets the needs of our community user base, while providing business-oriented features to professional users as part of the Essential package.

Support for existing customers

Any current or future changes to existing customer pricing will be communicated directly to those customers. However, we believe you’ll appreciate the simplicity and added value of our new Essential package.

We are excited about the future and the opportunities these changes will bring. Our goal is to continue delivering exceptional value, supporting your needs, and growing together. Thank you for being a part of our ZeroTier journey and for your ongoing trust and support.
